Method for legal analysis: how law is analyzed against facts once the sources are established. Decomposition of the governing norm into its elements, subsumption per element, interpretation methods deployed in order, weighing of divergent authority, five skeptic lenses, grounded risk assessment and reasoned position-taking. Load whenever a legal question is analyzed rather than merely reported: advice, assessment, review, or any answer that applies law to facts. Works standalone or alongside moonlit-operator, which governs how sources are found, verified and cited; this file governs what is done with them; the calling instruction governs what is produced.

Install

Skills are an open format, and most AI apps take them natively: claude.ai, ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Langdock, Mistral (Vibe Work and Vibe Code), and coding agents such as Claude Code.

1. Download the skill archive.
2. Open the skills section of the app you work in (in claude.ai: Customize, then Skills; in ChatGPT: Plugins, then Skills; in Microsoft 365 Copilot: the Skills tab).
3. Upload the archive.

In Claude Code:

unzip moonlit-reasoning.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

In an app without native skills, add the skill's text as project or custom instructions; the plain markdown lives at moonlit-reasoning.md. The per-app walkthrough is on the skills page.
