Operating rules for the Moonlit Legal Research MCP: how to find the governing law, verify it at the source, and cite it so every claim can be checked in place. Load whenever Moonlit tools are available and the task touches law in any way (a legal question, research, a memo, commentary, contract or clause review, compliance check, monitoring, drafting with legal content, or checking the citations in an existing document), even when the user does not mention sources or citations. Works standalone or beneath any other instruction set: this file governs how sources are found, verified and cited; the calling instruction governs what is produced.

Install

Skills are an open format, and most AI apps take them natively: claude.ai, ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Langdock, Mistral (Vibe Work and Vibe Code), and coding agents such as Claude Code.

1. Download the skill archive.
2. Open the skills section of the app you work in (in claude.ai: Customize, then Skills; in ChatGPT: Plugins, then Skills; in Microsoft 365 Copilot: the Skills tab).
3. Upload the archive.

In Claude Code:

unzip moonlit-operator.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

In an app without native skills, add the skill's text as project or custom instructions; the plain markdown lives at moonlit-operator.md. The per-app walkthrough is on the skills page.
